Joint account or separate accounts: managing money as a couple

5 min read

The moment you move in together, the question lands: do we merge our accounts or not? There's no universal right answer, but some setups work better than others.

The three classic models

Everything joint. One account, both salaries in, all spending out. Simple and transparent, but it needs full trust and similar spending habits.

Fully separate. Two separate accounts, and you split the bills. You keep your independence, but it quickly becomes a headache to know who paid what, and nobody has the full picture.

The hybrid model. Each keeps a personal account, and you open a joint account for shared expenses: rent, groceries, bills. By far the most common: independence plus a clear shared pot.

The real question: who puts in how much?

Splitting everything fifty-fifty feels fair, but it isn't always when salaries differ. Contributing in proportion to income is often more equitable: whoever earns 60% of the household income puts 60% into the shared pot. That way each person keeps the same breathing room at the end of the month.

The account isn't the whole story

People assume the topic is the account structure. In reality, the number-one problem for couples is a lack of shared visibility. Whatever the setup: if one partner doesn't know where the shared budget stands, tension follows.

What changes everything is that both see the same thing, at the same time:

  • How much is left in the shared budget this month
  • Which fixed charges are still coming
  • Where the shared money goes, without having to ask
