Budgeting app without a bank connection: how to do it

By Rémi Buchaillat4 min read

Not everyone wants to connect their bank to an app. On principle, out of caution, because their bank isn't supported, or simply to stay in control. Good news: you can run a budget perfectly well without bank sync. You just need the right tool and a small routine.

Why skip bank sync

  • Privacy: no data flows from your bank.
  • Awareness: logging a purchase makes you feel it. Many people spend less when they write everything down.
  • Unsupported banks: some small or foreign banks aren't available through open banking.
  • Control: you decide exactly what goes into your budget.

The limits to know

  • Logging takes time: count one to two minutes a day.
  • Forgetting is the main risk: one missed expense skews the budget.
  • Balances don't update themselves: check them against your bank now and then.

Three options without sync

  • A notebook or spreadsheet: free and flexible, but everything is manual, including the maths. Our Excel budget template saves you time.
  • CSV import: export your history from your bank's website and import it into an app. No permanent connection, and no line-by-line typing.
  • A budgeting app in manual mode: you create your accounts and log your spending, the app handles the maths, the charts and budget tracking.

The routine that works

  • Log each expense the same day, ideally right after paying. Thirty seconds.
  • Batch small expenses if you prefer: one moment in the evening.
  • Once a week, compare the app's balance with your bank's. A gap? An expense is missing.
  • Once a month, review your budget and adjust next month.

Features to demand from a manual app

  • Free creation of accounts (current, savings, cash, joint)
  • Fast entry: amount, category, date, account
  • A budget per category, with alerts
  • Balances computed automatically from transactions
  • Optional CSV import, to avoid re-typing
  • No ads, no data selling

With Trya, without connecting your bank

Trya works entirely without sync, and it's included in the free plan:

  • Manual accounts: enter the bank name, the balance and the account type (current, savings, joint, crypto…).
  • Transaction entry: expense, refund or income, with the account, description, amount, date and category.
  • Auto balance: an option recalculates the account balance from the transactions you log.
  • Budgets, envelopes, assets and couple avatars: everything works manually.

To avoid typing without a permanent connection, CSV import (TRYA+) accepts up to 1,000 transactions per file. And if you change your mind one day, sync goes through a licensed provider: your credentials never touch Trya's servers. For more on that, read our article on bank aggregators.

Yes. Several apps let you create manual accounts and log your spending. Trya does it for free, with budgets, envelopes and asset tracking.

How long does manual budgeting take?

One to two minutes a day if you log each expense as you pay, plus a few minutes a week to check your balance against your bank.

Can I import transactions without connecting my bank?

Yes, with a CSV file exported from your bank's website. Trya accepts up to 1,000 transactions per import (TRYA+).
