What is the 50/30/20 method?

The 50/30/20 rule is a simple framework popularised by US senator Elizabeth Warren. The idea: split your net monthly income into three big buckets to manage your money without overthinking.

50% for needs: what you MUST pay every month to live โ€” rent, groceries, transport, bills, insurance, essential subscriptions.

30% for wants: what makes you happy but isn't vital โ€” eating out, outings, shopping, streaming subscriptions, hobbies.

20% for savings: what you set aside for goals (holidays, big purchase, retirement, emergency fund) or for debt repayment.

It's deliberately broad to stay realistic. If you can't hit the 20% savings target, you probably need to cut wants โ€” not needs (which are non-compressible).
